A trigger point is a hardening of a usually small area of a muscle, which sometimes may harden to a point that, when touched with one’s finger, it may feel solid. It will even generally feel as if it is not a part of the muscle.

But make no mistake, the trigger point is an actual part of the muscle; it is not something separate. If one presses one’s finger upon the trigger point, it will usually slide away from the touch. In the top figure at left that is labeled “moderately inflamed trigger point,” the trigger point is sliding to the right after being pressed upon. If the trigger point is pressed from any other angle, it will again move away from the point of pressure.

Other names for Trigger points are Trigger Zones, Trigger Spots and Trigger Areas. The term Myofascial will also be frequently mentioned with Trigger Points.

All of these terms refer to the same area of a muscle. Trigger Points are localized and sometimes extremely painful knots found in any skeletal muscle of the body. When they are moderately inflamed, trigger points can be slightly to moderately painful, but when they severely inflamed, as in the lower figure to the left, the pain can be so severe that it may easily incapacitate a person.

Trigger points may be described as hyper irritable spots in a skeletal muscle that are associated with palpable nodules in taut bands of muscle fibers. Trigger point researchers have learned that these palpable nodules are small contraction knots and are a common cause of pain.

In fact some pain experts have estimated that as much as 85% of human pain comes from trigger points. The good news is that the dedicated physical therapists at Soderberg Physical Therapy, LLC, know how to relieve trigger point related pain to a significant degree and in many, many cases even to relieve the pain completely.
